22nd April Subculture at ARU Students' Union |
Subculture returns to Anglia Ruskin University's Academy, after a long absence from its home turf.
The AMS lot have spent the last few months trawling around the Cambridge alternative music underground, and have featured on nights with local Cambridge promotions groups, as well as Cambridge bands. After much research.. (Ok, Partying), we found one of the things people like most is 'The Cheap' or 'The Free'. That's right, not only are we giving all you early arrivers a free drink this Thursday, we're also making it free entry for the first hour. But if you are planning to arrive after 10 - we'll still have the usual great SU drinks offers on all night (10% off for AMS cardholders) and will be charging just £1.50 on the door for students, £2 for the public. We're not about making a profit this Thursday, we just want everyone to have fun! We've even got a few freebies for you.. This subculture will be going back to it's roots. If you attended the first night of the year in Freshers, then you will remember the antics and mayhem that created one of the most memorable nights of the year. We are currently in the process of putting together some fantastic attractions for the night, and there will definitely be some surprises in store! If you have any song/artist requests, please post them here If you love rock/alternative music, and if you are sick of university work, then on the 22nd of April, there is only one place to be...SUBCULTURE. |

15th May Gig: Sworn Amongst/Abadden/To The Lions/A Thousand Sins at The Portland Arms |
Enough Metal to melt your face off!!
Entrance: £6! Sworn Amongst: Since forming in 2003 Sworn Amongst has steadily built a fan base with their studio releases and their brutal live performances. After 2005's independently released debut Derision of Conformity, Sworn Amongst caught the eye of metal label Rising Records who signed them in 2007. The band headed into the studio to record And So it Begins which was well received by fans and critics, with Metal Hammer calling the album "A massively promising & accomplished debut." Abadden: What can I say about these guys that you don't already know? Having stepped in at the last minute to successfully replace Godsized, you lucky, lovely people get a chance to see them again. Having their debut album 'Sentenced to Death' released via Rising Records that oozes both old and new school styles of thrash, expect an intense and amazing live show. To The Lions: Recently coming out of a (I believe) 2-year hiatus, local metalheads To The Lions are eager to get back into the mix and blow the lid off of the Cambridge scene. Plans to release some new material this year will no doubt only strengthen their resolve. A Thousand Sins: These guys may be young, but that does not take away any of their talent and skill whatsoever. With having numerous live shows under their belts already and having reached the semi-finals of the Strawberry Fair '10 band competition, it is highly recommended you see these guys, as they will also be supporting Criminal at the upcoming Rocksoc gig. |

12th June Rocksoc picnic at Jesus Green |
What better way to spend the day waiting for the may brawl than with a bunch of goths/metalheads/etc lazing in the sun with BBQ and booze? It's bring-your-own-booze, but if you are a member of CURAS then you can probably source your booze there, as we have tended to semi-amalgamate in the past. It's also bring-your-own-food: we will have a BBQ or two but you may want to bring your own. |
||
12th June May Brawl 2010 at The Man on the Moon |
SKULL BRANDED PIRATES I can safely say these guys were amazing when they last played for us. In fact, you could say they shivered our timbers, and this time will be no exception. Their style can be likened to a mix of Maiden, Children of Bodom, a dash of Blind Guardian and an obviously massive pirate influence. If you missed them last time, this is your 2nd chance! Besides, who else will play a song about a lobster that has grown to be man-sized, and whose fury of his pincers was enough to shake the heavens from the skies? Oh yeah, and they have pyro (sort of). SORCERER'S SPELL Yes, The Spells bring their own brand of power metal for another stint in Cambridge. An obvious highlight for those that have seen them before here and elsewhere, you find someone that says they aren't great and I'll show you a wimp and poser! Jagermeister Metal anyone? ANNWN Think Ensiferum, Tyr and Moonsorrow. Get yourself to their site and give them a listen as I have no doubt they will satisfy all your folky needs. TORMENTED VISION This is heavy Thrash all the way with a generous helping of Death Metal and featuring some of our very own RockSoc colleagues. Think of a heavier Slayer, Sepultura and Kreator. This is what Demolition Hammer should have sounded like on their last album! Price for members: £3 advanced (email events@rocksoc.org.uk) £4 door! Remember your ID! Price for non-members: £4 adv (same email) £5 door! Dressing as a pirate is optional, but encouraged. |

7th Aug. Gig: The Argent Dawn, Ruinor, Clinical Sacrifice & Depraved Plague at The Man on the Moon |
The Argent Dawn -
- Five-piece death metal band from the southwest of England. Formed in late 2006, they already have 7 full UK tours under their belt and are certainly no strangers to the live metal scene, sharing the stage with the likes of Dying Fetus, Napalm Death, Whitechapel, Despised Icon and Ted Maul. Drawing influences from bands such as Decapitated, Bloodbath and Aborted – as well as the ‘new breed’ of metal titans, such as Whitechapel and The Acacia Strain. Ruinor - An extreme metal band from the Cambridge area who have been together for a while now writing original material and doing a few select covers. Currently gigging around the Cambridgeshire area. Clinical Sacrifice - These local metal heads are coming to thrash the hell out of the crowd yet again! Pulling out the stops and giving the best they get at every event they play! If you want to mosh your heads off this is the band to do it to! Why miss the chance to participate in walls of death and mosh pits? Come and see them!! Depraved Plague - Featuring ex-members of death-metal band Perish In The Flames - this Cambridge based death-metal band are here playing to you guys! They will blow your heads off with banging drums and heavy guitars!! £6 |
