Rock! Rock! Till you drop!

at The Man on the Moon

AWAKE (headliner)
Having played to critical acclaim before, Awake once again return to Cambridge to do the same again. Having a distinct prog-metal flavour in the style of Evegrey and Pagans Mind, it will not be long before they play much larger venues so you would be mad to miss this!!

SMOKESCREEN
Speak to anyone who has seen these guys before and you'll hear nothing but positivity spewing forth like no tomorrow. As such they are a favourite amongst many of us as they always bring a great show along with them whilst serving us a good dose of straight-up Metal.

TRIFIXION
Trifixion will make their debut Cambridge appearance under their new name, as they used to be known as Ditchcreeper and is definitely a band for those that are of the more brutal persuasion.

Details:
Non-Members - £5 on the door, or £4 in advance (adv ticket link coming soon)
Members - £4 on the door, £3 in advance by emailing events@rocksoc.org.uk stating how many you want and (most importantly) the names of the people that want a ticket.

2nd March

Charity gig for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation

at The Portland Arms

Rocksoc are putting on a gig in aid of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation where 100% of the door takings will go to the charity.

Sachanovak
Sachanovak have played for us a couple of times before and have been amazing. Currently doing the local gig circuit in abundance, they play a healthy dose of solid hard rock in the vein of QOTSA, Foo Fighters and Muse.

The Scene Is Dead
Oh no it isn't! As the band put it, they're like "Big ballsy rock with killer riffs that will make your ears bleed with excitement." Think of such bands like the Wildhearts and you wouldn't be far off.

Rosewood
Hard rock/Metal is what it's about here. Becoming a staple of live venues in Cambridge, I'm sure many of you will have seen Rosewood before. If you haven't, why not? Come down and see what all the fuss is about for yourselves.

Admission is £4 on the door for everyone. I know the usual Rocksoc member discount does not apply, but as it's a charity gig so we want the largest amount of money we can get. However we will be handing out special fliers that give you £1 off entry to Wake Up Screaming after the gig, which means members will only pay £2 to get in!

Subculture

at ARU Students' Union

Subculture returns to Anglia Ruskin University's Academy, after a long absence from its home turf. The AMS lot have spent the last few months trawling around the Cambridge alternative music underground, and have featured on nights with local Cambridge promotions groups, as well as Cambridge bands.

After much research.. (Ok, Partying), we found one of the things people like most is 'The Cheap' or 'The Free'.

That's right, not only are we giving all you early arrivers a free drink this Thursday, we're also making it free entry for the first hour. But if you are planning to arrive after 10 - we'll still have the usual great SU drinks offers on all night (10% off for AMS cardholders) and will be charging just £1.50 on the door for students, £2 for the public. We're not about making a profit this Thursday, we just want everyone to have fun! We've even got a few freebies for you..

This subculture will be going back to it's roots. If you attended the first night of the year in Freshers, then you will remember the antics and mayhem that created one of the most memorable nights of the year. We are currently in the process of putting together some fantastic attractions for the night, and there will definitely be some surprises in store! If you have any song/artist requests, please post them here

If you love rock/alternative music, and if you are sick of university work, then on the 22nd of April, there is only one place to be...SUBCULTURE.

Gig: Sworn Amongst/Abadden/To The Lions/A Thousand Sins

at The Portland Arms

Enough Metal to melt your face off!!

Entrance: £6!

Sworn Amongst:
Since forming in 2003 Sworn Amongst has steadily built a fan base with their studio releases and their brutal live performances. After 2005's independently released debut Derision of Conformity, Sworn Amongst caught the eye of metal label Rising Records who signed them in 2007. The band headed into the studio to record And So it Begins which was well received by fans and critics, with Metal Hammer calling the album "A massively promising & accomplished debut."

Abadden:
What can I say about these guys that you don't already know? Having stepped in at the last minute to successfully replace Godsized, you lucky, lovely people get a chance to see them again. Having their debut album 'Sentenced to Death' released via Rising Records that oozes both old and new school styles of thrash, expect an intense and amazing live show.

To The Lions:
Recently coming out of a (I believe) 2-year hiatus, local metalheads To The Lions are eager to get back into the mix and blow the lid off of the Cambridge scene. Plans to release some new material this year will no doubt only strengthen their resolve.

A Thousand Sins:
These guys may be young, but that does not take away any of their talent and skill whatsoever. With having numerous live shows under their belts already and having reached the semi-finals of the Strawberry Fair '10 band competition, it is highly recommended you see these guys, as they will also be supporting Criminal at the upcoming Rocksoc gig.

Sacrilege will return to the Q Club once more on Friday 21st May, (which is World Goth Day Eve) from 9pm until 2am and will cost just 4 of your UK pounds, with the usual concession of £3 for students and the unemployed.

DJs this time will be:

  • Ozzy - our official photographer and DJ extraordinaire easing us into the night with an hour of Goth Ambient, Neo-Folk and Mittelalter.
  • Major Tom - a brand new DJ who has No Fear!! I've no ideal what he'll be playing but I can guarantee it'll feature Bauhaus.
  • Dvae with a Goth covers set!
  • Me playing a 'Now That's What I call Goth' set. Really, I just had far too many 'Q Club Classics' left over after my last set, so you're getting a whole bunch more. :-)
  • DJ Raggedyman spinning all the leftover requests that none of the rest of us have been able to fit in, plus apparently some 'Goth Pop' to keep us amused until we get kicked out. I promise there will be no more trouble for moshing from the bouncers!

Please fire away with your requests either before the night or during. If we don't have it on us to play then, we'll guarantee to play it at the next one (assuming we can read your handwriting of course)...

We are gradually working our way through the problems with the sound system with the venue - who incidentally are 100% behind continuing with rock and alternative nights at The Q Club - by September the venue should have something rock / alternative running every weekend of the month!

We'll keep on putting the nights on as long as you keep coming to them - thanks for supporting I-Od, and enjoy Sonisphere if you're going.

Rocksoc picnic

at Jesus Green

What better way to spend the day waiting for the may brawl than with a bunch of goths/metalheads/etc lazing in the sun with BBQ and booze? It's bring-your-own-booze, but if you are a member of CURAS then you can probably source your booze there, as we have tended to semi-amalgamate in the past. It's also bring-your-own-food: we will have a BBQ or two but you may want to bring your own.

12th June

May Brawl 2010

at The Man on the Moon

SKULL BRANDED PIRATES
I can safely say these guys were amazing when they last played for us. In fact, you could say they shivered our timbers, and this time will be no exception. Their style can be likened to a mix of Maiden, Children of Bodom, a dash of Blind Guardian and an obviously massive pirate influence. If you missed them last time, this is your 2nd chance! Besides, who else will play a song about a lobster that has grown to be man-sized, and whose fury of his pincers was enough to shake the heavens from the skies? Oh yeah, and they have pyro (sort of).

SORCERER'S SPELL
Yes, The Spells bring their own brand of power metal for another stint in Cambridge. An obvious highlight for those that have seen them before here and elsewhere, you find someone that says they aren't great and I'll show you a wimp and poser!
Jagermeister Metal anyone?

ANNWN
Think Ensiferum, Tyr and Moonsorrow. Get yourself to their site and give them a listen as I have no doubt they will satisfy all your folky needs.

TORMENTED VISION
This is heavy Thrash all the way with a generous helping of Death Metal and featuring some of our very own RockSoc colleagues. Think of a heavier Slayer, Sepultura and Kreator. This is what Demolition Hammer should have sounded like on their last album!

Price for members: £3 advanced (email events@rocksoc.org.uk) £4 door! Remember your ID!
Price for non-members: £4 adv (same email) £5 door!

Dressing as a pirate is optional, but encouraged.

Gig: The Argent Dawn, Ruinor, Clinical Sacrifice & Depraved Plague

at The Man on the Moon

The Argent Dawn -
- Five-piece death metal band from the southwest of England. Formed in late 2006, they already have 7 full UK tours under their belt and are certainly no strangers to the live metal scene, sharing the stage with the likes of Dying Fetus, Napalm Death, Whitechapel, Despised Icon and Ted Maul. Drawing influences from bands such as Decapitated, Bloodbath and Aborted – as well as the ‘new breed’ of metal titans, such as Whitechapel and The Acacia Strain.

Ruinor -
An extreme metal band from the Cambridge area who have been together for a while now writing original material and doing a few select covers. Currently gigging around the Cambridgeshire area.

Clinical Sacrifice -
These local metal heads are coming to thrash the hell out of the crowd yet again! Pulling out the stops and giving the best they get at every event they play! If you want to mosh your heads off this is the band to do it to! Why miss the chance to participate in walls of death and mosh pits? Come and see them!!

Depraved Plague -
Featuring ex-members of death-metal band Perish In The Flames - this Cambridge based death-metal band are here playing to you guys! They will blow your heads off with banging drums and heavy guitars!!

Halloween Themed Rock Night
'Stuff People Know And Can Dance To'

So it looks like the new format is the one to stick with... after the success of September's BHS, the nights will run as scheduled on 4th Fridays bi-monthly from 2011; But to work around other local nights, the remaining two will be on 5th Friday in October (29th) and then 4th Friday in Dec (Xmas Eve!)

Music - ... Stuff People Know And Can Dance To ...br/> = modern / commercial release metal from 1990 onwards... I-Od is the place for... classic and shall remain as such and continue to run on 1st Friday in its present format.

It's unlikely that it will run monthly - from October, The Q Club will be running 4 rock / metal nights per month!

Guest DJs are once again booked - DJ Darkchill will be returning... and have a special surprise DJ in December!

Once again PLEASE give us your input / feedback / requests on what you would like / not like at the night in question... and invite a friend or two if possible!

PS - stay tuned, there should be a Q Club website up soon, which will be a central point to find out what's on and when @ The Q Club...

"Very good to see new faces at October's I-Od and for all the positive feedback - and once again ensures that I can carry on putting the night on UFN.

So we're back in on bonfire night this time, (nicely timed so you can go see the fireworks on the common, get a quick pint across town and still get plenty of rock time!) and once again in usual format - Classic Prog (in The Moog) from 9pm, Power Hour (Power Metal / 90's Thrash) fro...m 10pm, 'New Classic' (recent releases from classic rock bands) from 11pm, and then Classic Rock Only, 1969 - 1990, from 11.30pm- 2am closedown.

Prices also remaining the same on the door and on the bar, usual £2 discount entry deal applies to you guys (FB Group Members) - BUT YOU HAVE TO SEND ME A MESSAGE OR WALL POST TO LET ME KNOW!

Door deals can be arranged if a group is arriving together,(e.g. coming in after a gig) --- ask and ye shall receive...

And while we're here - Black Hole Sun is confirmed for Friday 29th October (Hallowe'en) and Fri 24 December (Xmas Eve).
It has also got to the stage where a website is required to list everything that is happening at The Q Club - it was easy to keep track of when it was just I-Od and Scarilege! More news on that (and associated FB group) when I get it done, sometime next week I hope."
