MINUTES
18/10/99
The meeting was started at 2044 BST when La Presidenta
arrived.
1. Talk on tinitus and the dangers of listening
to loud music.
The idea was quickly dismissed although information
regarding this and also the possible therapeutic effects of listening to
heavy metal is to be sought out and put on the webpage. It was mentioned
that somebody once suffered a fractured bone at a Manowar concert. Iain
suggested putting something along the lines of "warning: may damage your
hearing" at the bottom of future WUS posters in order to attract more people.
There was a short digression as to the meaning
of a strange email sent to the Secretary by DD involving pigs.
2. The "all new shiny" website.
The committee were told that it would be updated
by Wednesday (or else they would be able to string up the president/webmistress
(unless it was DD’s fault and not hers)). Things to be included were agreed
as: minutes, events, gigs (Cambridge and London), the CD library, reviews
& links.
Buying Kit a computer to assist with her web duties
was momentarily considered but dismissed on the grounds that it was an
unnecessary waste of Rocksoc funds and she "could cope".
3. WUS slots.
It was proposed that the current practice of having
four one-hour sets at WUS be changed so that people did not have to listen
to an hour of something that they didn’t like. Changing it to eight half-hour
slots was the initial idea of the WUS Officer, although the Secretary suggested
six 40-minute slots. It was agreed to try the former for the next few WUSes
(until Christmas) and see how it works out. There will initially still
be 4 DJs - each with two (split) sets, though preferably not both catering
for the same distinct genre. It was noted that the current practice might
be used during the holidays when DJs are in short supply.
4. Aims of WUS.
This old favourite was brought up once again after
we were informed that some people were whinging about what was played.
It was agreed that whatever got played some people would not like it. Jinx
told us that the initial aim (according to Steve) was something along the
lines of: "a night where Rocksoc people could come along and not feel out
of place".
The present setup, which allowed both chatting
and dancing (due to the different sound levels in the two different areas),
was praised.
It was noted that WUS had become a commercial
rock night, and was making the society a fair amount of money that should
be used for the benefit of members. La Presidenta suggested making it free,
however it was generally agreed that it was a very bad idea to make a continuous
loss and it was cheap enough anyway. It was noted that money was being
spent on other things, such as the planned gig every term and the transport
to the Brumfest.
The discussion then moved on to the type of music
that should be played. It was agreed that as a compromise between pleasing
everyone and pleasing a narrower scene, WUS should concentrate on the "well
populated genres" in order to please the majority of members, although
still allow the occasional more alternative set. The WUS Officer informed
us that preliminary results from the WUS survey show "Classic Metal" as
a clear favourite. It was noted that the new half-hour sets should serve
to reduce the number of people leaving due to an unpopular set.
Certain DJs were criticised for not playing enough/any
requests (and also being rude to people who asked). It was noted however
that all DJs were amateurs and volunteers and were not able to (and could
not be expected to) bring hundreds of CDs, like a professional DJ would
do. The idea of trying to enforce a "minimum requests" quota was dismissed
as there was no Rocksoc CD library at present (a complete topic in itself
that may be discussed at a later meeting) and people rarely brought CDs
to WUS. It was also noted that people complaining about the lack of a certain
genre would often not be prepared to DJ themselves.
5. FTOTM dates this term and next.
We were reminded that the November date is already
booked, and agreed that the December date should be booked ASAP, so that
we do not miss out (perhaps due to a Christmas party). It was decided not
to have one in January, as many members will not be around. It will return
in February (all being well).
6. Crash space for Brunel Rocksoc on 9/11/99.
Kit is to appeal for some and also keep in contact
with Brunel as to their plans. It was suggested that they could get a coach
to bring them and then take them away the same night and thus avoid the
problem completely.
7. Brumfest.
Jinx is to get some quotes for a coach to take
us there. It was decided to limit the numbers to about 50 (a coachload);
tickets will be on sale soon from Jinx and will be available at pubmeets
and WUS. It was decided not to subsidise (or make a profit on) the tickets.
Having a raffle for a few tickets was dismissed as a silly idea. Oli is
to pester Emo again about when we need to have numbers by. It was decided
not to send out Brumfest information to non-email members as it is primarily
a student event and it is also too late.
8. Gigs at the Boat-Race.
The Secretary pointed out that there were a some
very good rock/metal bands playing the Boat-Race from time to time and
that Rocksoc was often poorly represented. He suggested that Rocksoc should
try and promote these (such as Deeper Purple this Saturday) more actively.
The WUS Officer said that the Boat-Race was quite expensive and wasn’t
really his cup of tea. It was agreed that (at least for the moment) it
would be up to individuals to publicise such events.
9. AOB.
T-shirts:
It was noted that there was a receipt book (for
Kit) to use, although it was not essential and that the money should be
given to Iain.
We were informed that there were about 30 left
and it was decided to pin some up at WUS to help sell them. It was noted
that the board that we took to the Freshers’ Fair could not be used as
we had given it away to "Pump Aid" (Jinx was mildly annoyed at this).
It was agreed that when there were about 10 left
the committee should look into getting some more done. The artwork currently
used on the WUS poster was suggested as a possible design, although Jinx’s
"Rocksoc Female Assault Force" design from last time was also mentioned,
as was the fact that he did not put nipples on it yet suggested cutting
holes in it instead. It was decided that the committee should choose the
design and try very hard not to repeat the fiasco that was the previous
T-shirt design choosing.
