MINUTES
15/11/99
The meeting was called to order at around quarter
to nine; all were present. The Secretary apologised for not having done
the minutes from last week, and for being late.
1. Senior Treasurer.
Following rumours that Fran Ebling was about to
leave, Iain had asked him outright and been told that this was indeed the
case. The Treasurer told us that he had already signed the accounts for
this year, and so there was no immediate concern. The Secretary suggested
Dr. Greaves as a possible replacement (the guitar playing Computer Science
DoS at Corpus Christi), and will look into it.
2. Brumfest.
Jinx informed us that the current tally was 42.
He also told us that the coach company would like us to pay the driver
on the night. There was some discussion about payment methods, resulting
in the need to check whether they would take a cheque without a guarantee
card, or if they would prefer cash (in which case the Treasurer would need
to sort this out). Sending them a cheque in advance would be offered as
an alternative as this would suit us better. There was a brief discussion
about carrying large quantities of cash around, and the suggestion of
"paying them on the way back" was quickly dismissed for obvious reasons.
It was decided to give out the tickets on the
night, and the Secretary is to pester the appropriate people if they have
not arrived by Wednesday.
There was then some discussion about finding the
place. It was agreed that we take an A-Z with us. Jinx said that he could
oblige. The Secretary suggested that we should just "follow the noise";
this was laughed at, but not completely discounted.
Kit then came out with: "don’t get fucking beer
on the minutes again Oli".
3. Events insurance for the X-Fest.
We were told that the current quotes of around
£80/100 sound too much just for "abandonment insurance". It was questioned
whether they included personal liability, and noted that the venue would
probably cover this (and also that: "people expect injuries" anyway). It
was agreed to find out about this.
4. AOB.
There was a bit more discussion about the AGM,
mainly concerned with finding a time and a place. Since the Thursday of
7th week, coincides with the March FTOTM, it was decided to have it during
6th week - on 24/2/00. It was pointed out that Jinx’s baby would be 1 week
old then, but then it was realised that 8th week would not be any better
for him.
Out of 212 members, it was estimated that we would
need to find room for about 60 or 70. It was also noted that some places
(colleges) were better than others at serving visitors at the bar. Churchill
was suggested as a possible venue, however the majority of the committee
("a band of town centre ponces" according to Jinx, objected at it being
miles away. Kings (where last year’s was) was also dismissed as the "porters
got anal past their bedtime". The next suggestion was Emma, and Roz (who
knows some of the bar staff there) is to investigate.
5. AOOB.
It was decided that the Vae Solis set at the X-Fest
would be 45 minutes long.
The meeting was closed at 2106, just as La Presidenta
was falling asleep.
Shortly after, it was pointed out to the committee
that not everyone was aware of the Monday pub meetings and that they should
do more to keep the membership informed of what was going on. We shall
see…
