1/ ROCK NIGHT IN THE ALMA
Over the Summer Andy has been liasing with the
management at the Alma with the intention of trying to set up a regular
rock night at the pub. This seems to be an idea which they are reasonably
keen on, and have agreed to host a trial night next week. This is going
to be on THURSDAY next week (12/10/00). Rocksoc will be providing and manning
the decks and the intention is to make the night solely requests in a manner
similar to the FTOTM evening s of the previous year. There was some discussion
over the details of this arrangement - it was decided that the evening
should run from 7.30pm onwards, and that it should be heavily publicised
in the preceding week in order to make it successful. There is the possibility
that this Thursday slot could become a regular weekly event for us should
the management of the Alma be suitably impressed by the turn out next week.
Andy agreed to DJ at first with the intention of passing this over to other
people later on, and to come up with a name for the event ('Rock Night
At The Alma' was suggested).
Further discussion was entered into concerning
the aims and possibilities of such an event. Following some discontent
concerning the material played at WUS over the Summer, this kind of requests-based
event has the potential to cater for a wider range of music in an environment
perhaps more conducive to the hearing of obscure / leftfield artists which
would be unlikely to be played much at WUS. The emphasis on publicity is
going to be on PEOPLE BRINGING THEIR OWN CDS. Another possibility for such
a night would be to dedicate half-an-hour or an hour to one person playing
more obscure music from a particular genre in an effort to introduce people
to new music and cater to those with more esoteric tastes. Album playbacks
(cf. the Maiden playback last term) were also mentioned.
Some concern was raised over the fact that the
first Rock Night will clash with Tight Laced, although this would not be
every week. Baz agreed to mail official after the Freshers' Fair about
it.

2/ FRESHERS' FAIR
Jimmer enquired whether the Fair would be selling
cheap beer again this year, which was suspected to be the case. It was
decided that the stall would need flyers, a large Rocksoc logo, the website
address, some boards and a piece of black cloth to cover the table. Baz
claimed to have many flyers, and was provided with more by Andy (along
with the return of the beloved laminating machine). Baz also agreed to
go and buy some material in the morning; Liz helpfully drew him a map to
find a fabric shop. Jimmer agreed to bring some cardboard boxes as boards,
and Roz said she'd print out a logo and website address. Oli said he would
cycle over to Andy's to pick up the T-shirts as well to see if we can flog
some more of those (despite Jimmer offering him a lift). It was decided
that there would be no free deal on WUS this year, as it is very cheap
anyway, and because it would be bad if we had to turn people away once
we've made them an offer of free / reduced entry. Andy noted that WUS has
been quite busy over Summer and that we'd made a profit, although he denies
embezzling the money. It was decided that two hour stints were reasonable
for staffing the stall at the Freshers' Fair and various people volunteered
to help (a tentative rota was drawn up). Baz informed the committee that
permission had been granted for the sale of T-shirts and membership at
the Fair.

3/ PUB CRAWL
It was decided to reinstate the Rocksoc Pub Crawl
next week. Deano and Rob Izzard are going to organise this, and a discussion
was entered into concerning the possible date. Friday week was mentioned,
but this was felt to perhaps be a bit busy for Rocksoc, and so Wednesday
was suggested as an alternative. It is thought that the Crawl will end
up in the Alma to show the Freshers where it is, although it was mentioned
that it maybe isn't a good idea to show them at the end of the Crawl. It
was agreed that some of us should meet the Freshers outside the main entrance
of King's College or in the Market Square before the first WUS in order
to show them the way there as well. To publicise these it was decided to
take big WUS posters to each College, preferably before Friday.
At this point it was mentioned that Rocksoc may
be organising /subsidising trips to Brumfest and the Morbid Angel gig in
Belgium later in the term but it was agreed that we would discuss these
after we've got Freshers' Week out of the way.

4/ WEBSITE
Andy voiced his disapproval at the current state
of the website, although Roz said that the site had been updated only a
few days ago. It was generally felt that the website should be updated
once a week, and various other things were suggested as improvements /
additions - Baz is to send Roz copies of the minutes she doesn't have to
update that, the CD library is to be catalogued again to assess what we
have 'lost' and it was suggested that Baz pester record companies for promo
CDs (as he is, in Andy's words 'the most anal record collector on the Committee').
It was noted that the CD library is currently underused and this should
be rectified.
The meeting sort of finished at 2205 (!) when
people started to drift off and / or become incoherent. Jimmer wittily
commented 'Bollocks'.
