MINUTES
09/10/00
Present: Andy, Liz, Roz, Oli, Jimmer, Baz. The
meeting commenced promptly at 2033. Ish. Gina had sent her apologies for
non-attendance due to having other commitments, but promised to start coming
more regularly as of next week.
1/ MANDATE
Oli had obtained yet another mandate from the
bank this week so that Liz and the other members of the committee could
sign it. This was therefore done; two members of the committee are required
to sign a cheque, and Liz is to obtain the chequebook from Mr. Hudson forthwith.
The Secretary expressed his pleasure at the fact that he may be soon reimbursed
for the money owed to him. Once again, I am required to include some of
the wording from the mandate for the records, as I was reminded by El Presidente,
and it appears thusly:
(i) That a bank account or accounts be continued
with Midland Bank plc (the 'Bank') and the Bank is authorised to:
a) pay all cheques and other instructions
for payment signed on behalf of the Society by any two of those listed
overleaf (the 'signatory') whether any account of the Society is in debit
or credit;
b) deliver any item held on behalf of the Society
by the Bank in safe custody against the written receipt of the signatory;
and
c) accept the signatory as fully empowered to
act on behalf of the Society in any other transactions with the Bank.
(ii) That any debt incurred to the Bank under
this mandate shall, in the absence of written agreement by the Bank to
the contrary, be repayable on demand.
(iii) That the Secretary is authorised to supply
the Bank as and when necessary with lists of persons to sign, give receipts
and act on behalf of the Society, and that the Bank may rely upon such
lists.
(iv) That these resolutions remain in force until
cancelled by notice in writing to the Bank signed by the Chairman or Secretary
acting or claiming to act on behalf of the Society, and the Bank shall
be entitled to act on such notice whether the resolutions have been validly
carried out of not.
At this point (2037) Baz said 'hello' to Dave
who had just walked in and waved. Someone asked Andy whether he was embezzling
Rocksoc funds but he claimed that this would not significantly increase
his income and therefore, no.
2/ SPONSORSHIP
The Secretary was handed yet another bloody form
to fill in by El Presidente. This particular bloody form concerns an agency
called Oxbridge Advertising who are set up to provide help with gaining
sponsorship for clubs and societies. In return for filling in their form,
they will send us a free 1000 copy 24 hour access photocopy card from Mail
Boxes Etc. (MBE) and a societies card entitling us to subsidies on all
'services' (though what these services are remains somewhat mysterious).
However, the Secretary was instructed to fill in the form and get the cards.
3/ ROCK SHOW
We have been contacted by Neil Jones, the marketing
manager at the Corn Exchange who also runs a rock radio show (Sundays,
2100-0000, 107.9fm, The Eagle). In return for plugging us on his show and
having us on to help him interview people and generally promote Rocksoc,
as well as lending us advance promo CDs for WUS, he would like us to promote
his show at WUS / with posters / on the mailing lists, and have free entry
to WUS. Everyone agreed that this sounded like an extremely reasonable
deal and Baz was instructed to get back to him to get things going. It
was agreed to plug him over the microphone at WUS once, or maybe, twice
a night at about 11pm, and to put up posters for him.
At this point (2122) Gina turned up and tried
to escape getting involved in the meeting, but she ultimately, like the
rest of us, had to cower beneath the burning glare of El Presidente.
4/ THIS IS SPINAL TAP
This is being shown at the Arts Theatre starting
from Friday. We have been contacted by the Theatre who are interested in
doing a joint promotion with us - if we advertise around Rocksoc (posters,
mailing lists etc.) then they will give us reduced entry to the Monday
night showing (hopefully 10pm, though it may be only possible at 6pm).
This was generally agreed upon and Baz was told to get back to them - I
will send the full times to Rocksoc-Chat.
5/ BRUMFEST
This is being held at the end of November and
will have the same format as last year. There was a lot of enthusiasm amongst
the assembled throng and it was agreed that it would be good to go to this
again. Last year the coach cost us £325 return, and it was agreed
that Jimmer was going to look into coaches / ask Jinx about last year,
particularly about ones with drivers who will know where we're going. There
was some discussion as to whether Rocksoc should pay for the whole lot,
and it was generally agreed that if we could get about 40 people to go
then it would probably be quite a reasonable thing to do. Oli is going
to mail Official to see what the reaction is.
6/ MORBID ANGEL IN ANTWERP
This is going to be on 22nd December and including
travelling is going to take about 2-3 days, so people might only get back
Christmas Eve. The full line-up when anyone last looked is Morbid Angel,
Hypocrisy, Behemoth, Children Of Bodom and The Crown. When the Secretary
stopped dribbling, he managed to write down that Oli was going to look
into borrowing a cheap minibus from either the Student Union or one of
the Colleges. It was agreed to look into the possibilities of Rocksoc getting
involved and contributing to either transport or accommodation.
7/ WEBSITE
No, no, don't run away, this isn't the usual weekly
website bitch! Andy suggested we came up with a list of things to go on
the website this week, and it was agreed that this week's nominations,
sorry, priorities should be the Pub-Crawl, WUS, Brumfest and the Thursday
Rock Night at the Alma.
8/ POSTERS FOR WUS
Andy didn't end up sending these to Oli and so
our plan for putting them up in Colleges didn't happen. It was agreed to
do this for the next WUS, but we'd discuss it next week. Baz agreed to
mail the Freshers' List to let them know that we would be meeting them
at 8.30pm outside King's Main Gate prior to the WUS on Tuesday. Baz, Roz,
Oli and Jimmer all agreed to turn up to this. Andy commented, in what is
becoming a regular point of conversation, that perhaps Baz didn't look
'heavy metal' enough to meet the Freshers and that they might mistake him
for a 'girly indie kid'. Or something along those lines. Baz agreed to
wear a heavy metal T-shirt and was somehow persuaded that it would be a
really good idea to wear corpse-paint (Postscript: this didn't happen due
to lack of being arsed; maybe next WUS).
9/ IMAGE
Oh dear, and it was going so well as well. at
this point Liz made a very valid point about the image which Rocksoc is
presenting. She commented that we are supposed to be 'Rocksoc' and not
'Metalsoc', and that we should be "apolitical, areligious and amoral".
She also noted that Jimmer getting pissed and shouting Slayer at people
at the Freshers' Fair was going to put off some potential members and was
maybe not a very good idea. Which is all fine. But from this point everyone
within earshot degenerated into a hour long discussion, the contents of
which I am not going to bore you with, particularly if you've been signed
up to that over the holidays. To try and pull out what was basically the
'consensus', the following points were reiterated (time after time after
time): Liz's point is sound in that Rocksoc should not be judgmental -
not politically correct, just that the society is about music and beyond
that people are entitled to their opinions but none of them should be presented
as part of The Rocksoc Mentality. WUS is a 'rock / metal / alternative'
night, according to the flyers, and as such if music is a) rock of some
description (and no, we're not going there) and b) not already played all
over Cambridge it should be admitted. Simply by democracy and the
fact that the DJs are pulled from the membership means certain styles will
get played more than others, but Andy's ultimate put-down to critics is,
"If you don't like the music, come and play a set", and no-one to
my knowledge has ever been refused.
The meeting never really finished, as everyone
is long sick of this argument and wandered off from the bickering, so that
means we're probably still in session.
I went home at about 2240 though.
