MINUTES
06/11/00

Present: Roz, Oli, Andy, Baz. Gina and Jimmer
had sent their apologies. The meeting began at 2052.
1/ MANDATE
Liz had not arrived yet and so Baz was unable
to present her with the mandate. The bank have asked to see valid ID for
everyone on the list that does not have an HSBC bank account - this meant
Roz, Gina, Liz and Andy. It is probably likely that everyone has to go
in together, but it was agreed to wait till Liz arrived to discuss it further.
2/ BRUMFEST COACHES
We now have another offer from a coach company
asking for £309 with a 10% deposit. This was felt to be a better
deal than the previous offer and so it was agreed that Jimmer is to send
them a cheque, signed by himself and one other valid member of the Committee
(currently Baz or Oli), and get them to send us a receipt and a letter
of confirmation. So far only three people have paid for their tickets,
though a lot of people have expressed a desire to go. Oli said that there
is allegedly some ambiguity over whether students and non-students have
to purchase tickets separately, but he has already asked them to confirm
this. Andy commented that there is no real reason why we have to tell them.
Oli also has the address to send the money to. BRUMFEST IS NOW ONLY TWO
WEEKS AND TWO DAYS AWAY! It was noted that is going to be a very busy week
- Monster Magnet on Monday, WUS on Tuesday, Brumfest on Wednesday, Immortal
on Thursday (fuck yeah!).
3/ ACCOUNTS
Liz was still not here, and so there was little
that could be done. Andy has counted the money and ordered the door sheets
from WUS. At this point (2100) Liz walked in, and there was much rejoicing.
While she went to the bar, Baz commented that the new Marilyn Manson single
was utter shite. Andy mentioned that he had unfortunately crushed a bunny
rabbit driving down the M11 back from the Therapy gig on Friday. Roz commented
that on her driving test, she swerved to miss a similar creature and almost
crashed into a wall. Andy commented that they made they 'dullest of dull
thuds'.
When Liz had returned, Andy produced the door
sheets, and Rocksoc's financial records scribbled on the back of a 'Rock
Night At The Alma' flyer. Andy said that all was needed now was to tot
up the incomings and outgoings, and revealed the current float. The accounts
are to be published as soon as possible on the website for everyone who
is interested; the money is to be paid into the bank this week. When everything
is sorted out, Liz is to contact Dr. Greaves (Senior Treasurer) so that
he can check over the accounts. It was agreed that
people are going to get together over the weekend
to get everything in order. By then, Andy is to have itemised the door
sheets. This is all to be completed by next Monday, so that we can have
a status report, and congratulate Liz and Andy on a job well done. Progress,
we are assured, is being made.
Going back to the mandate, now that Liz had turned
up - Roz said that the accounts could be sorted out at her place on Saturday.
If Gina turns up as well, then everyone who needs to can bring along ID
and the mandate can be taken along to HSBC and handed in (since then Gina
has stated that she should be able to attend on Saturday as she is not
working, and has an interest in the accounting). Oli pointed out that HSBC
shuts at 1530 on Saturdays and that they would have to go before then.
4/ CD LIBRARY
Two separate lists currently exist - the old one,
and the items that have been added to this list. Roz is to combine these
lists and present the new and improved list on the website. It was felt
that the library should be used more frequently, and that we should advertise
more prominently that people can borrow from it. It was suggested that
we will have to set up a proper record and deposit system.
5/ THURSDAY NIGHTS
At this point (2119) Ryan came over and let us
know what his thoughts on the current format of the Thursday nights was.
He felt that we need more variety in the evening in order to please more
of the people in the pub. He said that he felt we could afford to play
around with the format of Thursday nights as we already have WUS as our
main night. Various people pointed out that the Thursday night is entirely
requests as it is, and so people were hearing what they wanted to hear.
Ryan suggested we played two songs of our own choice and then one request
in order to get more variety - we could ensure that a certain proportion
of softer stuff got played. Andy pointed out that we would then be exercising
more control and as such defeated the object of the night in the first
place. It was also suggested that we could use a microphone to let people
know that they could make requests; there was some concern from Ryan that
although Rocksoc members seem very confident about coming up and making
lots of requests, other people in his pub may be rock fans but may not
have the
confidence to come up to one of us; also, if
they only hear the heavier stuff requested by the Rocksoc regulars, they
may not think we will play their (potentially) softer requests. It was
felt that to get the ball rolling, it may be necessary to play some 'softer'
stuff that wasn't
requests in order to make sure people knew we
would play anything under the (extremely wide) banner of rock. Ryan said
that he would come up with a selection of posters which we could see on
Thursday and from which we could pick the best to put up around Colleges,
lecture halls and the like. It was felt that a more evocative title was
needed to attract people's attentions (despite Andy's protestations that
'Rock Night at the Alma' did exactly what it said on the tin). Suggestions
(mostly from Liz) included: Wake Up Whimpering, WUSS and 'Liquorice Allsorts
Of Rock -Come Along And Have A Suck'. I believe some of these were serious.
Ryan suggested putting lists of bands / genres on the posters as examples
of the evening's scope - this started the inevitable (and tedious) discussion
of what constituted rock / indie / alternative and heavy / soft, none of
which I have any intention of typing out. It was also felt that posters
should have 'Rocksoc' on, rather than 'Roc Soc', as this may lead to the
confusion that we were a society for large mythical birds. Somewhere in
the midst of the above discussion, Liz questioned Baz's gender. I feel
it is also important to record for prosperity that Oli forced Roz to go
and watch Oasis with him over summer.
6/ GIG
Good news first - Andy has been contacted by the
manager of Marillion, who want to do a tour of universities next February,
and want to play in Cambridge. We are obviously very interested and Baz
is to go and speak to the Boat Race this week. Baz is also going to forward
to Committee all the information about psych bands he has been sent by
Jon Jarrett. It was agreed that we should organise a gig for the end of
term if possible -bands mentioned that we are to contact include: Mine
(Sheffield based hard rock group), some of Jon's psych bands, and maybe
Fire And Forget. Baz is to speak to the Portland Arms.
7/ SPINAL TAP
Oli felt that we hadn't really got a good deal
out of the Arts Theatre, as Monday nights are student nights anyway, and
we only got the same discount as other students. Baz felt the discount
obtained for non-student Rocksoc members was probably worth putting a couple
of posters up and informing the mailing lists (the latter of which someone
would have done anyway). It was agreed to bear it in mind for any future
collaborations.
The meeting finished at 2205.
