MINUTES
13/11/00
Present: Andy, Gina, Liz, Baz, Jimmer. The meeting
almost started at 2105, but the Committee were distracted by Andy enquired
whether Baz was short for Barrington. Baz looked at him in utter disbelief,
before Liz commented that she once had a teddy bear called Barrington.
Baz assured everyone that neither was his name Barrington, nor was he a
teddy bear. Liz went on to comment that she once had a brown bear which
she innocently called Boddington. Someone thought that this would have
been a witty pun on the words 'beer' and 'bear', but this was not generally
agreed on. Baz received a cheque from Liz, for which he was very grateful.
1/ BRUMFEST
Money received so far was noted and Jimmer confirmed
that he had a receipt and confirmation from the coach company. The coach
was to leave Victoria Avenue at 6pm, and it was hoped that we would get
a driver who actually knew his way around Birmingham a bit. It was suggested
that just in case we obtained an A-Z of Birmingham and Jimmer agreed to
sort this out. Oli had not arrived at this point and so little else could
be said. except that at this point (2116) Oli walked into the Alma. When
questioned about numbers of people who were confirmed so far, he told everyone
that 11 people had paid so far, that 40 tickets were coming from the organisers,
and that Oli would be sending them a cheque on Friday for the sold and
unsold tickets. Oli agreed to spam official and Baz said he'd get in touch
with the Freshers.
2/ MARILLION AND GIGS
Thus far there has been a disturbing silence from
Marillion. Andy said that he would get back in touch with them this week.
Early in the week Baz had visited the Portland Arms and the Boat Race.
The Portland Arms have told us that they can't take us at the end of this
term, and so we are going to have to look into a gig there at the beginning
of next term. Bands mentioned were the usual suspects - Mine, Interstate,
The Enchanted, Vae Solis, some psych bands (Jon who was passing mentioned
the Woronzow bands and Bedouin, though we'd have to speak to the Boat Race
about that). The Boat Race had actually been quite helpful when approached
about Marillion, and it was agreed that although this would be a useful
'foot in the door', we should build relations with the pub putting greater
emphasis on the web site and plugging the rock groups they have playing
there on the mailing lists (the Boat Race often have rock covers and originals
bands playing there, such as Pink Fraud next week). Baz is to get back
in touch with the Boat Race and see about getting Rocksoc
discounts if we can get a significant number
of people down there. Baz is also to speak to the Portland Arms again about
next term. At this point (2121), Deano put some Tom Jones on the jukebox.
Baz approved.
3/ MR SULLIVAN
John told us that he had spoken to the Damerell,
and now has the passwords and other necessary paraphernalia. He is going
to wait a couple of days, and if everything looks OK, is going to go ahead
with taking over the position of Systems Administrator. Baz is to sort
out some of the members' e-mails which are currently piling up (either
new ones or old, irrelevant ones) and send the appropriate corrections
to 'rocksoc-official-owner@chiark.greenend.org.uk'.
At this point, Baz went to the bar and got roped
into buying a drink for Andy. He was told off for thinking that Andy drank
pineapple and soda, when everyone knows that he drinks orange and soda.
4/ QUIZ
Jimmer and Baz talk over the weekend and write
a quiz. This will probably be held on the last Thursday of term, in the
Alma instead of / in addition to the regular Thursday shenanigans. Various
other games and activities were discussed, including Jenga, pass the parcel
(to rock music, natch) and Twister. Liz commented that she would be unwilling
to unwrap anything wrapped by anyone else in Rocksoc, and thus volunteered
to do our wrapping for us. Oli commented that he was actually quite good
at wrapping. Roz questioned his masculinity. Everyone else politely looked
elsewhere.
5/ LIZ'S AOB
i) Allegedly there are pictures of Oli naked with
two half melons, and with melted and unmelted candles, floating around.
It was generally felt that these should be within the public domain, and
thus Roz is to procure these items and put them on the website.
ii) The accounts - all of the incomings and outgoings
appear to be in order. Oli presented Liz with the stubs from the T-shirt
sales. Liz
mentioned that the 92nd bank sheet was missing,
and that Andy is to look for it. If it cannot be found, we can order another
one, but the bank will charge us. We could also ask Baz Bazaz if he knows
where it might be. Liz is to write up the accounts this week, give this
to Roz, who is then going to put them on the website.
6/ THURSDAY AT THE Q CLUB
We have been offered a monthly Thursday night
at the Q Club. Roger has suggested a rock night, with a more commercial
slant than WUS. This would narrow our options over what to play, but is
still not that restrictive given the wide spectrum that the term 'rock'
covers. We would need regular DJs for this kind of night, rather than volunteers.
At the moment, Roger is offering us this evening basically for free to
see if we can make it work. Obviously this would cause a clash with our
Thursday nights at the Alma and Tight Laced. It was suggested that we liase
with the people who run Tight Laced to see if it would be possible to alternate
the nights to avoid clashes, and clashes with The Alma would only be one
in four anyway. It was suggested that a feeler be put out on the mailing
lists to see what people think, and go from there. It was agreed that Andy
was to talk to Roger, Max and Ryan and see what they all think, Baz is
to mail announce; this is to be thought about in the near future, not over
the holidays, but early next term.
The meeting was closed at 2158.
