Minutes: 2002-2003/2002-07-15
Minutes of the RockSoc Committee Meeting
15th July 2002
Present: Baz, Elizabeth, Emma, Oli , Peter
Meeting opened 2057
Minutes short this week as the Secretary is about to go to a Slayer gig.
1) Minutes for approval
Baz told the committee an amusing story about a British officer, some
Australian troops, and a monocle.
The minutes were approved
2) Treasurer's report
This item did not happen, by reason of the treasurer not being present. And
because HSBCs computer was down when he enquired about our finances. (see
item 10 below).
Emma has received a letter from the Societies Syndicate, who seem to be
confused by the statement of Maybrawl finances we sent them; Emma will get
in touch with them and explain.
ACTION: Emma to speak to the SS
3) WUS
Emma has designed an excellent new flyer, featuring a being of unknown
variety playing the trumpet. A copy was shown to the committee. Elizabeth
suggested that the words 'Alternate Tuesdays from July 16th' be replaced
with a list of the next few dates, as most people were too apathetic to work
out the former. Oli asked for the URL to be included (readable when reduced
to A6 size), and that the words which were present as text be replaced with
a gif, as some of the people who might want to print the flyer might not
have the correct fonts. Emma agreed to do this.
Baz offered his apologies for the next meeting; he is going away for a week
on Thursday.
Taff has asked for the situation concerning requests at WUS to be discussed.
The Kambar have a policy of not allowing people to speak to the DJs by
sticking their head into the booth during the set; the RockSoc committee
have a policy that DJs must take requests. Taff ahs had a bollocking from
the Kambar about taking requests, and so have other DJs.
The committee decided that this problem could be best solved by providing
pens and request forms on the door and near the dancefloor so that people
could pass slips of paper over to the DJ instead. Emma volunteered to make
some for tomorrow.
My spellchecker doesn't know the word 'bollock'.
Elizabeth pointed out that the increase in price will mean that we need a
lot of 50p pieces on the door. Baz said that Ben will get these from the
venue on arrival.
Baz will lend the WUS box some money for a WUS float as the WUS box has
_still_ not been topped up.
ACTION: Emma to make the alterations to the flyer and bring some to next
committee meeting.
Emma to make WUS request slips
4) Festivals
Wacken: Oli has made a phone call asking where the fuck Baz's ticket is. He
will chase them some more. The committee were relieved to know that he was
not in any immediate need of money.
Bulldog Bash: Siobhan and Ian said that some of Andy's mates are taking a
bus and if no-one else is going he will try to cadge a place. If not, he is
willing to drive up to 4 people in his car.
Bloodstock: Oli has mailed -official about Bloodstock. So far the only reply
has been from a person who thought Oli would like to know that she would
like to unsubscribe from -announce. I don't know why she thought this info
would interest Oli.
Whitby: Emma stated that some of the performers at this festival, were
really nice people. So far only goths want to go to this festival. I wonder
why. Oh, and Baz. Baz wishes it to be minutes that he is not a goth. Not per
se. Even though he goes to the Calling every fortnight.
Baz also said that food and sleep at Wacken were unnecessary; the only
sustenance needed was beer and metal. And that if one was sufficiently
metal oneself, one could exist on metal alone without the beer. Baz has
been listening to too much Manowar.
5) October gig
Elizabeth pointed out that the deadlines for most of the monthly listings
was early September, and that most of the committee would be away during
August. Therefore we needed to arrange this now.
Baz said that Geared4 have agreed to play, but the other bands contacted
have said no. He will contact a pop punk band that he knows of, and the
Positives (who always pull in good crowds)
Project have mailed Emma about a 3 band goth package that they have asked us
to promote. We don't have enough money to promote it. The committee agreed
that Emma should suggest some other promoters, and suggest that we do a load
of publicity in return for a members discount. Emma thought it was possible
that the Calling would do it.
6) The Other Boat Race dates
Oliver has not told the committee how plans for his wedding are going. Emma
still needs to speak to Stan about the dates we have booked.
At this point, Oli appeared to think that he was Spiderman. Must be
something to do with the fact that he was on his second pint. He claims that
it was related to Deano's interest in small spaces
ACTION: Emma to speak to the Boat Race.
7) Freshers' week
We have not paid CUSU. We should pay CUSU. Baz will pay CUSU tomorrow.
ACTION: Baz to pay CUSU
8) Website
Baz asked Oli if he had added the events for 2001. Oli said that he had not.
Per se. His excuse was that he was rearranging all the links in the database
so that they looked exactly the same as before. Only prettier.
We also need to add trips to Scream Bloody Roar and the Eurometal night in
Nottingham. There are no reviews for these. Elizabeth will use her diary to
write some. Baz will write about Dungeonfest.
ACTION: Elizabth to write them.
9) CD library
BLOODY HELL WE"VE GOT
IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It needs cataloguing. Elizabeth and Emma argued for some time about who
should have this wonderful privilege. Oli suggested that if they both
catalogued it together, it would prevent them from stealing all the records.
Emma and Elizabeth will catalogue it at 7pm this Friday when Elizabeth will
have just broken up for the summer holidays hurrah, so she hopes Emma likes
Alice Cooper.
ACTION: Eli\zabeth and Emma to catalogue it.
10) Abhorring
We abhor HSBC again ,and all their works especially their main computer and
their sysadmin.
We may possibly abhor Bar 8, but as Jimmer is not present and the committee
have not been in bar 8 UNLIKE JIMMER (Elizabeth kept very quiet here) we
weren't sure.
We abhor Cambridge Council (except Emma) and also the lack of litter bins
between the chip shop and the pub.
Also Oli's handwriting.
And financial advisers.
And Estate agents
And Lawyers
And people with money.
At this point Richard told the committee about the performance of the FTSE
today. How rock and roll. Buy him a cardigan.
11) AOB
Elizabeth reminded the committee about the charity collection which they
took at the Sick and the Dead event last term. This has not yet been paid to
the charity concerned. It needs to be. The committee agreed that it needed
to be.
Oli asked if the minutes could be printed double sided. Elizabeth made a
reply that contained the words 'Fuck' and 'off''
