Interstellar Overdrive

at The Q-Club

"Thanks to everyone for increased attendance this month - and dropping the 'No Tracks after 1990' rule also worked well with 95% of requests being played.

Now The Q Club is holding more events, they are looking to improve the sound and lights, fingers crossed on that one... but want the night to continue in it's current format.

So get your requests in for what / who you want to hear - DJ Richard Watts should be returning for The Po...wer Hour this month, with a Guest DJ in there too... and hopefully some door staff so you don't get overcharged!

If you do get overcharged on the night, do come and find me once you're in and I'll make sure you get a refund and in for free the next time... or if you fancy some beer money, we're recruiting door staff - all you have to do it sit the till, stamp some hands and watch for the late night drinkers trying to sneak in downstairs for free!

If you can help out, please message me, I will let you plus a guest in for free AND pay you £10 for each hour you do - usually it's the 11pm - 1am slots that we're short for. Also cloakroom staff - anyone who wants to work the cloakroom gets the proceeds @ £1 per item - can be split between more than one of you of course.

Thanks once again for keeping the night alive - see you soon.

PUBLIC WELCOME - 9pm - 1am (and maybe afterparty in town for those of us who don't want it to end there..?)

This month also features special guest perfor...mances from two awesome bands who you are gonna love, if you don't already..

AWAKE THE EMPIRE; http://www.myspace.com/awaketheempireuk

A hardcore melodic rock band from Cambridge, ATE have supported Elliot Minor, Brigade and My Awesome Compilation. They have been gaining some impressive ground over the past few years, and currently have a headliner gig lined up at the Junction in May, as well as featuring on the top 10 buzz chart at the 'Red Bull Jam' competition, where they are competing with thousands of other bands nationally to play some of the biggest festivals this summer. Give them a listen here and vote them 5 stars whilst you're at it!

http://redbullbedroomjam.com/band/videos/awake-empire-six-power-nothing

FEDERAL BLACK FORTY:

Another talented local Cambridge band, Federal Black 40 are described as commercial hard rock, with classic rock influences. They have previously supported the likes of Soulfly, Hawkwind and Chris Shiflett (of the Foo Fighters) and claim influences from GN’R, The Almighty, Jet and AC/DC.

Listen to them here:

Tickets on the door, £5.

1st April

Interstellar Overdrive

at The Q-Club

Can it be? Have I managed to keep this running for a whole year?!?

Well, from me going into The Q Club in April 2010 as the first rock night in there after re-opening, we now have at least one rock/alternative night in there EVERY weekend of each month, plus improvement to the sound and lighting WITHOUT an increase in door or bar prices!

So come, one and all, to celebrate one year of the ONLY night in Cambridge that plays Just Cla...ssic Rock (not Nu-Metal / Pop Punk et al) --- door discounts as always = £2 for you guys on the FB group - and still the only night in CB that gives door discount to the Over 30s... And you'll be wanting a bottle of Jager behind the bar for free shots for all at midnight, no doubt? Consider it done.

Hopefully more than one guest DJ this time - and at least one (possibly more) RockSoc Presidents in that lineup!

So cut and paste in the following to a message to me or on the event / main I-Od wall if you want in for £2 - and invite a friend along as always!

~~~ \m/ Happy Birthday I-Od! £2 Entry for me, please... \m/ ~~~
Orestea + Vier + To The Lions + Alone With Wolves
at The Portland Arms
From Facebook:
Orestea return to Cambridge in support of their début album Love Lines and Blood Ties. The female-fronted band have stormed stages at Download and Bloodstock with their powerful brand of melodic metal, and look set to rise higher and higher.
Vier, are one of a rare breed — an all-female band with genuine talent. If you like your metal with a high degree of technical skill and song writing ability, but prefer your bands very easy…on the eye, you need to see this band.
To The Lions return to the Cambridge scene after an extended period of studio time and rehearsals with new drummer Mark Richards, gunning hard for the front lines.
Alone With Wolves pull together early Underoath-style metalcore with post-hardcore song structuring to great effect. Do not get to the venue too late to see this band!
Tickets can be purchased on the door for £5 or £4 in advance online.
As a special extra, we'll be having not one but two guest DJs this month. First up we have DJ Paganflame playing a new romantic/80's set; followed by the return of Sacrilege favourite CyberAndy. Plus resident DJs Alixandrea & Dvae with 'The Best of Sacrilege', playing their favourite tracks from the previous twelve month's playlists. And as if that wasn't enough incentive, there will also be sweets and other goodies.
We will also be giving free entry to anyone who brings us birthday cake! :-)
May Brawl
at The Portland Arms
This year's may week alternative is confirmed for Saturday 18th June, so mark it in your diaries. Advance tickets are available online. We'll be having a picnic on Jesus Green from 13:00 beforehand, so come along to chill out first!
Headlining: The Prophecy
Hailing from the darkest, deepest part of the UK – West Yorkshire – The Prophecy justifiably headline the 2011 May Brawl having been part of the vibrant UK scene since 2001, releasing several highly-acclaimed albums and playing all over the world.
Comparisons to bands such as My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost would be selling these guys short as they most definitely have brought their own sound and style to the table which has to be seen and heard to be believed. Really amazing stuff which will truly be the icing on the cake when they hit the stage.
Replacing Degenerator are Nya. For those that remember Nya the last time they played Cambridge, you will also remember that due to a number of circumstances that they only had the opportunity to play an extremely short, but amazing set.
To set things right, they have been invited back and alongside a new vocalist, will more than justify their return appearance!
As metalrage.com puts it “…the songs are indeed nicely balanced mixes of catchy choruses, heavy riffing and melodic, harmonious vocals. Their groovy mix of modern (melodic) metal and rock definitely does the job for me…”.
Last but not least are To The Lions, who have been part of many excellent local gigs for quite some time now will be opening the night. Strong off the release of their new Spent Shells EP, expect a solid dose of heavy metal, Cambridge style!
Join us from 13:00 onwards on Jesus Green for some serious chilling before the gig. Bring food, a BBQ if you wish and your own booze and come and laze around for an afternoon!
Freshers' Fair '11
at The Portland Arms
Another great annual Rocksoc event, and this one ties in nicely with the Cambridge fireworks, which just so happens to be less than a two minute walk to the venue!
Conquest of Steel
True Metal stalwarts Conquest of Steel prepare to descend upon our fair city with the intent of playing the most awesome of shows with the most fist pumping, crowd rousing, heavy metal anthems of all time.
If you haven't seen these guys before, now is your chance, and this is something certainly not to be missed. This is Old-school/traditional/NWOBHM style at its finest and most intense so don those patch jackets, unsheath those swords, raise those hammers and if your head falls off due to far too much handbanging, bang with your neck instead!
Dakesis
Power, Rock, Prog, Metal — all of these words could be used to describe Dakesis, but the only real word would be 'Dakesis'. A 5 piece from the deepest, darkest parts of Birmingham, Dakesis have a rapidly expanding fan base that will no doubt include all of you once you have see them live and quite possibly before if you give them a listen (which you really should).
Dethonator
Mix amazing riffs, stellar vocals, thundering drums and an ability to write mindblowing songs and you would come up with Dethonator. A great rock/melodic edge mixed in with the purest metal. Really, really great stuff! "Go see 'em" as someone put it.
Tickets: £4 door/£3 adv. for Rocksoc members (please bring membership card). £5 door/£4 adv. for non-members. Advance tickets are available online.
Playing anything from early 80s punk, new wave and goth to the new romantics and electronica, plus all influences. Let's not forget cock rock, metal and those special big hair rockers in spandex and make up! And I'm sure plenty of your favourite pop/cheese later on in the night.
